Objective: The purpose of this paper is to present preliminary results on the prevalence of fibromyalgia in the adult Danish population. Methods: The reported study is based on a national health interview survey on musculoskeletal diseases carried out by the Danish Institute for Clinical Epidemiology in 1990/91 on approximately 6,000 randomly selected Danish citizens more than 15 years of age. For this study, 1, 219 subjects from the eastern part of Denmark aged 18 to 79 years were asked about widespread muscle pain and/or fibromyalgia. One hundred and twenty-three persons fulfilling our screening criteria were asked to participate in a clinical examination. Clinical examination for fibromyalgia could be performed on 65 persons. Results: Eight female subjects out of 1,219 persons met the 1990 American College of Rheumatism criteria for fibromyalgia. Conclusion: The minimum prevalence of fibromyalgia in the Danish population between 18-79 years of age was found to be 0.66% [95% confidence limits 0.28%1.29&]. © 1993 Informa UK Ltd All rights reserved: reproduction in whole or part not permitted.
