Following Schwartz [Phys. Fluids A 1, 167 (1989)], we consider flow in a rotating Hele-Shaw cell where the Coriolis effect is significant. In that paper the Coriolis term is included in an ad hoc manner. We derive the model with the exact form of the Coriolis term, and show where it differs from that of Schwartz. The linear stability analysis carried out by Schwartz is repeated and the results for the two models are compared. © 2005 American Institute of Physics.
